Finally, at least some common sense: The International Swimming Federation (FINA) bans men who transition to women after age 12 or have undergone puberty from competing In Women’s Olympic swimming events. FINA is now studying, and I think leaning towards creating an open category where athletes will compete based on their gender identity. My question is how they are going to define “transition.” Does that mean giving a male puberty blockers only? Or does it require puberty blockers and treatment with cross-sex hormones? Or does it require the use of puberty blockers and cross sex hormones followed by surgery?
I’m also extremely concerned that parents be making the decision for a child under 12 to transition. How can any parent make that decision for a child that young? It’s insanity, and many nations such as Sweden, Finland, and the UK are putting the brakes on using puberty blockers and cross-sex hormone treatment, let alone surgery. Seems the better option would be to just create an “open” category for those who identify as transgender.

Republicans in the Pennsylvania legislature have blocked a bill that would provide over $259 million to Penn State University because Penn State Health Children’s Hospital is providing “gender affirming care” to minors, some as young as 5 years old. The hospital claims it does not conduct gender reassignment surgery on minors, but instead refers them to surgeons who do. However, the do provide injections of puberty blockers and cross sex hormone treatment to children.
I will support an adult’s decision to transition to the sex, or if you prefer, the gender of their choice. I also believe that there are some adults whose body dysphoria is such that transition is the only viable option for them. However, the key word is “adult.” Not only is “gender affirming” medical intervention largely experimental, about 80% of children outgrow it. Given these scientific facts, it is unconscionable to allow minors transition, or begin transitioning with puberty blockers – the term affect is unknown.
Simply put – leave the kids alone and allow them to make a decision when they become adults. In the meantime, therapy not cross-sex hormones should be utilized.
